Dead men tell no tales, but in the riveting new Nick and Nora Mystery, they sure leave a lot of clues . . .

When a local PI’s untimely death is ruled a suicide by the police, budding sleuth Nora Charles has no intention of letting sleeping dogs lie—or sleeping cats, for that matter. Certain it was a case of foul play, Nora rouses her trusty sidekick Nick and launches an investigation of her own. Then a second PI is murdered, and Nora knows the two men were on to something—and that she’s on to something too.

Following the enigmatic clues left by her late predecessors, Nora soon uncovers a plot that involves a local politician, missing campaign funds, and what could be a bogus real estate deal. But when hints of treason surface, what started as small-time thievery soon balloons into a matter of national security. With the uncanny Nick sniffing out—and spelling out—leads, Nora follows a trail that will take her to the heart of a shadowy conspiracy, and into a trap set by a conniving culprit that will have her wishing she had Nick’s nine lives . . .

Excerpt

What’s the matter, Red? Got something on your mind?”

I flushed at the nickname, one that Leroy Samms had bestowed on me back in college, where we’d first met. Sparks had flown between us, but we were on the verge of graduation and headed in different directions with our lives. It rankled me that ever since we’d reconnected, that spark still seemed to be there, at least on my end. As for Samms, well, he’d always been a hard one to read. I tried not to notice how the knit sweater beneath his leather jacket molded to his body like a second skin, or how one inky curl fell casually across his broad forehead as I bit out, “I do. Not that it’s any of your concern.”

He shot me a maddening grin, displaying not only his dimples but his perfect set of white teeth. “What’s the matter? PI school not going well? You know, if you can stick it out you might actually learn something. Maybe that cat of yours should have taken the course too, seeing as he’s always on the scene. I don’t know which of you is a worse body magnet.”

“Merow!”

We both looked down. Nick squatted beside my feet, his head tilted to one side. He fixed us both with what I assumed was the cat equivalent of an annoyed stare.

I placed a hand on each hip and said sternly, “Nick! What are you doing out here?”

Samms made a big show of looking up and down the street, then glanced at Nick. “Sorry, pal, your radar is off today. No bodies as far as I can see.”

“Very funny.”

I bent down and gathered all twenty-plus pounds of Nick up in my arms and quickened my steps to the Poker Face’s entrance. Samms beat me there with two long strides and pushed open the door, making a low bow as he did so. “Allow me.” He actually had the temerity to look amused as I swept past, Nick’s legs dangling at an awkward angle. As I approached the booth I noticed that only Ollie remained. He cast a curious glance Samms’s way as I set Nick down on the bench, then turned to me. “Everything okay?”

I let my lips stretch in a wide smile. “Couldn’t be better. Just peachy.”

He gave me a hard stare, then said, “Chantal got a text from Remy and had to leave. Louis had to go too. So that leaves just . . . us.” He transferred his stare to Samms.

I slid into my seat and pulled my sandwich plate in front of me. Samms nodded at the other empty seats. “I was going to go to the diner for a quick bite, but that sandwich looks pretty good. Mind if I join you?”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Ollie and I both answered at the same time. The men exchanged curt nods and then Samms slid onto the bench directly opposite me. He pointed to my sandwich. “Say, that really does look good. Jose must be improving.”

I glowered at him. “Jose didn’t make it.”

“Oh? Might be worth a try, then.” Jose himself chose that moment to walk through the kitchen door. Samms held up his hand, motioned him over.

“I’ll have a Bud on tap, and one of those.” He pointed to my sandwich.

Jose nodded and moved off. I scowled at Samms. “There may not be any roast beef left. We did a pretty good job demolishing it.”

“No matter,” he said cheerfully. “Worst-case scenario I’ll just head over to the diner after I finish my beer. Tonight’s the meat loaf special, and Doris does whip up a mean meat loaf. She usually sets some aside for me every Tuesday but”—he let out a sigh—“after next week that’ll all change.”

My head snapped up. “Next week? What happens next week?”

He raised his hand and did a casual inspection of his fingers. “I finally get sprung from active duty here.”

My eyes widened. “You mean the mayor finally hired a new chief?”

“Yep. My replacement is scheduled to arrive Monday.” His bottom lip twitched as he stole a glance at me. “Try not to miss me too much, will you?”

“No problem there. I’ll have to remember to send Daniel a sympathy card, now that he’ll have to contend with you day in and day out.”

“FYI, sweetheart, your boyfriend is happy to finally have me on board. And believe it or not, I’ll miss working with the guys at Cruz.” He leaned forward and placed one hand over his heart. “You know, you could sound a little disappointed, Red, after all we’ve been through together, meant to each other.”

Nick lifted his head, looked straight at Samms, and made a little mewling sound, deep in his throat. He lifted his paw and placed it on top of Samms’s hand.

Samms burst out laughing and jerked his thumb at Nick. “Well, what do you know. Looks like your cat will miss me.”

I glared at Nick. Nick removed his paw from Samms’s hand. “Too late, you turncoat,” I hissed. “Thanks a lot.”

Nick stretched out and put his paws over his eyes.

“He looks as if he’s put on a few pounds,” Samms observed. “But I guess he’s got to eat well to keep his strength up. Finding dead bodies can take a lot out of you.”

My lips thinned. “Do you ever get tired of harping on that?”

He shot me a lazy grin. “That depends. Do you ever get tired of finding them?”

“Er-ewl,” Nick warbled. He jabbed his paw at the velvet pouch on the table.

I looked at him. “Oh, so you weren’t getting all misty-eyed over Samms’s departure, were you? You want your favorite toy.”

I snatched up the Scrabble pouch and shook it. Nick laid one paw on my knee and reached up to swat at the pouch with the other. I undid the top and spilled a few of the tiles out onto the floor beneath the table. The cat let out a rumbling purr, then hopped down and wiggled his rotund body underneath the table. A few minutes later we could hear the tiles being batted back and forth. Samms looked at me and didn’t even try to hide the grin that split his face from ear to ear.

“Well, he certainly does seem to like those tiles. Now, those words he spells out, they are PG, right?”

I made a sound somewhere between a hiss and a grunt then snatched up my sandwich, took a large bite, and then dropped it back on the plate. “Damn, it’s cold.”

“That’s because you’ve been doing more talking than chewing,” Samms pointed out. “I’m sure Lance would be glad to heat it up for you. Want me to go over to the bar and ask?”

I was just about to tell Samms exactly where he could go—and it definitely wasn’t the bar—but Jose came over just then with his beer. As he set the frosted mug in front of him, Samms reached over and picked up my plate. “Would you mind heating this up for the lady? It seems to have gotten a bit cold.”

Jose took the plate and shuffled off toward the kitchen. I glared at Samms. “I could have asked him myself, you know.”

Samms spread his hands. “Hey, just trying to be a gentleman. I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, you know, what with running Hot Bread and taking that PI course.”

Ollie cleared his throat. “Speaking of that, Claymore Jarvis was Nora’s instructor tonight,” he said. “Remember him?”

Samms let out a snort. “Jarvis, huh? Well, I’m glad to see he’s doing something constructive for a change.”

I eyed him. “I take it you don’t agree with his theory about Whip Jennings?”

Samms’s eyes widened. “How did you . . . did Jarvis bring it up?” At my nod, he frowned. “So he’s still beating that dead horse, eh? Look.” He started to tick off on his fingers. “The murder weapon was found in Whip’s hand, and there was a note on the desk. As for that big case”—he made air quotes around the last two words—“no one knows anything about it. Whip only kept notes in his head. The only other person who might know anything would be Whip’s admin slash girlfriend, and she didn’t want to get involved, which I personally think was a wise decision.” His hand shot out, covered mine. “I don’t know what Jarvis said to you about all this, but trust me, it’s most likely a waste of time.”

“How kind of you,” I said icily, “to tell me just how I should spend my time, but as you well know, I’m perfectly capable of making my own decisions.”

Samms’s pocket suddenly started to play “Music of the Night,” one of my favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite musicals. I gave him a pointed look. “You’re a Phantom fan?”

“Oh, yeah. Anything Andrew Lloyd Weber, really, but I’ve a particular soft spot for the man behind the mask.” He whipped out his phone, glanced at the number, and stood up. “Looks like I’ll have to take that sandwich to go.” He tossed Ollie and me a laconic grin. “It’s been a pleasure.”

I sighed. “It is getting late. I may as well tell Jose to wrap my sandwich too.”

A black paw snaked out from underneath the table just then, pushing a brown tile. The paw snapped back underneath the table, repeating the action two more times. When a few minutes passed and no paw and no more tiles appeared, Samms leaned over and picked them up. He laid them on the table in front of me. There were two Ss and an I. I glanced down as a furry black and white face poked out from underneath the tablecloth. “I think you forgot a letter, pal. An H would have spelled hiss. Although . . .” I moved the I in between the two Ss. Sis. “These letters make sense too,” I told the cat. “Although, if you really wanted to show off, you could have picked a more difficult word.”

“Oh, cut the little fellow a break,” Samms said and chuckled. “The cat’s probably tired. After all, it takes a lot of energy—”

I held up my hand. “Don’t say it,” I said. “Please, please, don’t say it.”

Samms let out a low chuckle and he and Ollie moved off toward the bar. I got down on my hands and knees and started scooping up the Scrabble tiles. Nick watched what I did intently, head cocked, paws tucked underneath him.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got them all,” I said, scooping up the last tile and dropping it into the velvet pouch. I rocked back on my heels and looked at the cat. “By the way, what’s with the solidarity thing between you and Samms? Are you really going to miss him?”

The cat’s shoulders rolled a bit, almost like a shrug. “That’s what I thought.” I slid onto the bench and laid the Scrabble pouch on the table. “It did sound like he was sticking up for you a bit, though. Imagine that.” I sighed. “At least one of us is winning him over.”

His golden eyes narrowed and the corners of his lips tipped up a bit, in a sort of pleased expression. It seemed, as always, as if he listened to and understood every word spoken.

Ollie walked over, paper bag clutched in one hand. As he set it down in front of me, I glanced casually over at the bar.

“Don’t worry,” Ollie said. “Your friend left.”

“Watch who you call my friend,” I muttered. “He certainly made it sound like looking into Whip’s death would be a gigantic waste of time. I, on the other hand, agree with Louis. It might make a very interesting article for Noir.”

Ollie pressed the bag into my hands. “If you feel you want to poke around a bit, I wouldn’t let Samms discourage you.” Ollie smiled and patted my hand. “If anyone can uncover anything new about Whip’s death, it’s you.”

He left me in front of the bar and Nick and I walked across the street to where I’d parked my SUV. A few minutes later we were on our way home, Nick riding shotgun, sprawled full-length across the passenger seat.

“So what do you think, Nick? I’m positive something’s up between Ruby and Jarvis, I’m just not certain what that connection is. I’m also positive that was her peering in the Poker Face’s window. I wonder why.” I’m sure most people would think I was nuts, talking to my cat as if he could answer me, but in my defense, Nick is no ordinary cat.

Nick let out a resounding, “Merow.”

“She could have been looking for me, right? Maybe she saw me too, at the school, and followed me because . . . well, maybe because she wants my help too, like Jarvis. Maybe she wants me to help prove Whip was murdered. I confess, that case got my attention. I mean, it just seems a little too pat to be suicide, doncha think?”

When I received no answering meow or purr, I glanced over at Nick. He was sitting up again, his tail straight up, his face pressed against the window. His body seemed taut, as if he were getting ready to attack. I put a hand out and rubbed his soft fur.

“I’m going to look into this, all right, if for nothing else just to satisfy my own curiosity—but I think tonight all I want to do is finish this sandwich, take a hot bath, and tumble into bed. Sound good?”

Nick swiveled his head to look at me. He drew back his lips, hissed, then his paw shot out and his claws scraped against the window. “Ma-rowl!”

“Goodness, Nick. What is wrong with you tonight?”

I got my answer as I made the turn onto my street. A beat-up Ford Mustang with California plates occupied the spot to the left of my driveway.

I knew that car. I’d been emailed enough photos of it, even ridden in it on my last trip to Carmel. It belonged to my sister, Lacey.

As usual, Nick’s choice of tiles hadn’t been random. All thoughts of Jarvis, Whip and Ruby flew straight out of my head, replaced by a sinking feeling.

This couldn’t be good.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

Bianca returned to her seat. “I know, Mel. It’s just unnerving. She’s almost seventeen, has a boyfriend, and close to graduating high school.”

A hmm escaped Melanie’s lips. “I know. I still can’t believe it, but enough of that. We’re here to support Sherry and have some fun!”

Bianca giggled at her sister’s enthusiasm, forgetting the empty nester syndrome that was creeping up her spine. Once 112’s song concluded, the lights dimmed. A shush took over the room, and Bianca crossed her legs. Melanie practically squealed in her seat. Spotlights and special lighting highlighted the catwalk. Then Bianca heard a woman’s voice over the microphone.

Thanks to the camera zooming in, Bianca could get a better look at the image on the monitor. The woman was curvy, with long, strawberry-blonde hair and a bright smile dancing across her full face. Though she had only talked to her through Zoom when she hired her, Bianca recognized Giselle Porter. “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. I’m your host, Giselle, and I’m happy to present to you this evening, our Clique Classic fashion showcase!”

The audience applauded and cheered.

“Amazing!” Melanie squealed.

Giselle continued. “We’ll be including our classic pieces this evening. “I’m also pleased to announce that since the scenery of this Edenville has struck me, I want our models to have their pictures taken around town after tonight’s first show! So… we’re going to be in Edenville for the next month!” The crowd cheered again.

“All month? That’s amazing!” Melanie exclaimed to her sister over the applause.

Bianca’s lips parted, speechless. Imagine how much publicity a month-long fashion event would bring to the town? Were more models attending? That would be a perfect networking opportunity for Bianca, since she did the graphics for the fashion show. Giselle already wrote a five-star review on her website. It was a matter of time before new clients came Bianca’s way.

Giselle said, “For tonight, we’re going to give you a preview of our upcoming summer line!”

More cheers, and whoops erupted from the crowd. Bianca giggled at the excitement. While she purchased nothing from Clique Classic herself—too out-of-the-box for her simple taste—the clothing line had a few items that piqued her interest. When she spotted Alyssa making her way back to her seat, Bianca stood to her feet. She noticed Alyssa looked back a few times, but she didn’t break her stride. When her daughter reached her, she touched her arm.

“Everything okay?” she asked her.

Alyssa shrugged. “Sure I guess. I thought I saw… I’m sure it was nothing.” She sat in her chair and adjusted in her seat.

“What? Something happen?” Melanie leaned over to hear.

Bianca sat next to her daughter. She didn’t know why her mind returned to the man from the day before. Sandy brown haired man who’d been looking for Sherry. “What did you see?”

Alyssa shook her head. “I couldn’t tell Mom. Like I said, it was probably nothing. There’s a lot of people here, anyway.” Alyssa tucked a curl behind her ear, and while Bianca didn’t want to accuse her daughter of not telling the truth, her mother’s intuition sensed there was more to the story.

“Here we go!” Melanie pointed to the stage.

Bianca refocused and joined in the cheering as the first line of models came from behind the sheer curtains. Hands on their hips, the women walked the catwalk as if they owned it. Black and white were their colors. A platinum blonde wore a block-colored dress, black and white. The other woman’s hair was jet black, long, and she was wearing a striped black-and-white dress.

“I love the stripes,” Melanie chimed in her ear, despite the loud music.

Bianca pointed to the platinum blonde. “I think I like hers better.”

Melanie nudged her shoulder as the next set of models joined the stage. The first two exited.

Giselle continued. “Short and sweet is the cool, summery look here, ladies and gentlemen. Our models are wearing khaki elastic shorts with red-orange jungle print tops, which look so cute with their open necks and cap sleeves. You can’t go wrong in this simple yet stylish outfit.”

The audience applauded once more.

Genre: Science Fiction/ Action/ Adventure

El is stuck with no way home and no way to apprehend the madman responsible for destroying his own planet. She is close to losing all hope, until her tracker goes off. An ancient artifact has been activated and it can get her off the planet…

…But only if she gets to it before he does.

Archaeologist, Quaid Daniels has never recovered from the humiliation of his last Mayan archaeological discovery. He keeps the downfall of his career in his living room—a mediocre petrified box. When he and his daughter accidentally turn it on and realize Quaid was not crazy, they embark on a journey to redeem his reputation.

This story has answers to the secrets of this planet, ancient technology, and a chosen race billions of years older than the world we know. It’s everything you want in a fast-paced science fiction novel and more.

Excerpt

Quaid put his hands in front of him and pushed through the brush. He was surprised to find they’d arrived in another clearing. There was something on the ground in front of Zoe, covered in brush and dirt. He could make out what looked like a path made of rock. Zoe and Jaxon bent down to start clearing away the debris.

“What is it?” Quaid said. He was cautiously excited. His past trauma with fake artifacts had given him some PTSD when it came to new discoveries.

“It looks to be some sort of floor,” Zoe said. “There are blocks and some of them, well, just come look. There’s a symbol. I’m pretty sure it’s the Mayan symbol for fire.”

Quaid walked over, careful not to trip on some vines strewn across the ground, and looked down at the square slabs of rock in front of him. It did look like a floor. The design Zoe spoke of was shiny, like there was something liquid inside of it.

“Is that…Mercury?”

“I don’t know. It kind of looks like it, but maybe a little shinier. But this is crazy. You would think someone would have found this, exploring out here.”

“How many people do you really think would be out here looking?” Spencer asked.

“A lot, why wouldn’t you want to explore?”

“Because it’s in the middle of a crazy-ass death jungle that no one wanted to venture into,” Jaxon said, sounding as though he had enjoyed this hike about as much as Quaid had.

“How big is it?” Quaid asked. They had cleared an area four blocks wide, but he couldn’t tell how far into the woods it stretched.

“Only one way to find out,” Zoe said.

The four of them worked on revealing more stones and Quaid pulled out his knife to cut away some of the more stubborn vines.

When they were done, they looked down at five more blocks with the same symbol making it six in all. They had clearly found something, but it didn’t make sense. It didn’t seem to tie into the artifact, or the Mayan calendar. The fear he’d been experiencing was replaced with adrenaline now. He found himself intrigued.

“What do you make of this, Zoe?”

“I don’t know yet,” she said, “I’m not sure what kind of element this is. The symbol for fire could be a clue.”

“Maybe it represents something else,” Jaxon said. “Something you’re not thinking of.”

“These look like torches,” Spencer said, pointing at large rock posts on the sides of the floor. “Lucky thing I have matches.” He produced a match box and, removing one, struck it quickly on the side.

“Spencer be careful, we don’t know if there are any sort of traps,” Zoey said.

At that moment, Spencer dropped the match and it landed on the rock beneath him.

A few of the blocks went up in flames and Spencer, despite his agility, barely managed to jump out of the way fast enough. “What the hell?” He yelped, patting his shirt to make sure he wasn’t on fire.

“Magnesium,” Quaid and Zoe said at the same time.

Look.” Jaxon pointed to the block beside the burning one. The liquid substance previously filling the square had drained out and the block lowered into the ground around a single piece of rough stone. It looked like a lever.

“What the hell?” Spencer said again, even more distressed.

Quaid couldn’t help the smile spreading across his face. “Zoe, it’s a puzzle.”

She smiled back. “You’re right. Burn them all!”

Gina’s Review

I really enjoyed this book and got through it pretty quickly because I just couldn’t put it down. I was so intrigued by the concept of multiple Earths and the notion of our histories, both cultural and religious, possibly being an illusion.

There’s also something about the cover that is really striking and it, along with the prologue, instantly pulled me into the mystery of this new world the authors have created – or rather, worlds.

There was a cliffhanger at the end so I’m looking forward to reading the next in series, but if you hate cliffhangers just be aware that this book has one. I did find the reading flow to be a bit off at times but it wasn’t bad enough to deter me from reading the whole novel in a few days.

If you’re like me and enjoy science fiction, action, and archeology, then I think you’ll like this book. There were parts of the story that reminded me of Stargate, other parts Indiana Jones, and other parts various mixes of other wonderful science fiction elements which all added up to a very unique story line all its own.

I wish to thank the publisher for providing a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

About the Authors

Summer grew up in the small town of Bellingham WA. Soccer was his life until he started his first of 5 businesses at the age of 25. Sci-fi has always intrigued him, like in when he was in high school there was a documentary about crop circles that he thought was compelling.

But it wasn’t till ancient aliens on the history channel and all the information showing up on the internet, that his imagination and thoughts of writing a book or a screen play came to life. He has always wondered; wouldn’t it be cool if there was other life somewhere else in the universe and even cooler if they weren’t out to kill us lol. Summer hopes to bring a whole new way of seeing what could possibly be out there in all that space and he also hopes he brings fun and imagination to many. Because who knows what’s really out there and it is fun to imagine right?

Dead Messages – Texts from Beyond Book 1 – A Paranormal Cozy Mystery by Kristen Brand

Today I’m happy to announce the release of Dead Messages by Kristen Brand, which is book 1 of the new Texts from Beyond series.

She texts dead people…

Sydney Farina, full-time baker and cynic, is having a bad enough week when her boss forces her to go into work on her day off. When she arrives to find her boss’s corpse on the floor, her week gets a whole lot worse.

She’s shocked to learn it was murder—though maybe not too shocked. Her short-tempered boss, Glenda Whitaker, made more enemies than she did sprinkled cupcakes.

Then the texts start coming.

They’re from Glenda’s number, demanding Sydney find out who murdered her. Sydney thinks the
messages are a bad joke at first, but when they reveal things only Glenda would know, she’s forced to accept the truth:

She’s getting texts from a dead woman.

Glenda’s ghost wants justice, but Sydney doesn’t know the first thing about solving murders. As she investigates her coworkers, can she find out who killed Glenda? Or will she join her grouchy boss on the other side of the grave?

Dead Messages is a cozy mystery novella with a touch of the paranormal. If you like quirky characters and fun whodunits, then dive in and start reading today.

Excerpt

She didn’t want to spend all day worrying about whether the messages were a glitch or not. She picked up the phone.

Sydney

Who is this?

She’d expected no response, but three little dots appeared to indicate Glenda was typing. The bathroom spun, and Sydney had to put a hand on the counter to steady herself.

How could Glenda be typing? Her corpse was lying in the morgue.

Glenda

It’s Glenda. I need your help.

Sydney

Glenda’s dead.

Whoever you are, you’re seriously messed up. This isn’t funny.

Glenda

I’m not trying to be funny. I was murdered. There’s absolutely nothing funny about this situation.

Sydney

Screw you.

Stop texting me, or I’m going to the police.

Glenda

This isn’t a joke. I’m trapped in some kind of foggy purgatory, and my phone is only letting me send messages to one person—you.

I don’t know what’s going on, but you need to help me.

It’s your responsibility.

Nope. No way was Sydney falling for whatever the heck this was. Some creep must have gotten ahold of Glenda’s phone and decided to play a sick joke. There were some seriously pathetic losers in the world who had way too much free time. Sydney should just treat the texter like an internet troll and ignore them.

She took another shower and then made coffee and oatmeal for breakfast. She was looking through her closet for something to wear when she realized she’d forgotten to text Faith, distracted by the messages from the Glenda impersonator. When she picked up her phone, more waited for her.

6:07

Glenda

Will you reply already? You’re acting incredibly immature.

6:12

Glenda

You can’t just ignore me.

6:13

Glenda

I have been murdered. Whatever you’re doing, it’s not more important than what I’m going through.

6:15

Glenda

Stop being selfish. You’re the only person who can help me get to the bottom of this.

6:22

Glenda

Please.

Dead Messages is available on Amazon or at these other book retailers. You can learn more about Kristen Brand here.

For Libby Beckett, opening her charming yarn shop, and introducing customers to the joys of knitting and crochet, is the work she was meant to do. Until the yarn she loves is used for murder….

Libby has come home to Collinstown, Maryland to live her dream and open her own yarn shop, aptly named Y.A.R.N., along the Chester River. To Libby, Y.A.R.N. stands for “You’re Absolutely Ready Now.” But the acronym changes whenever inspiration strikes, and customers add to the list of suggestions that fill the blackboard wall in a shop stuffed with color, fiber, and comfort.

Libby is thrilled when she lands famous Norwegian knitting celebrity Perle Langager for a series of events at Y.A.R.N. Libby’s English bulldog, Hank, has been modeling one of Perle’s doggie sweaters, and customers just can’t wait to see Perle in action. The mayor of Collinstown even decrees a Collinstown Yarn Day to celebrate. But once Perle arrives in town, she seems distracted and on edge. And when she’s found strangled with a skein of red yarn, Libby knows she has to solve a knotty mystery before her new life unravels.

Publisher’s Summary

Guess who cries at Lou Thorpe’s funeral

No one. His wife, grown children, and best friends all attend the service, but no one sheds a single tear. Poor Lou. He goes out for his morning walk, and a crazed driver knocks him out of life. Crazed? With no car, no driver, and no witnesses, it’s difficult to say. Was it an accident or intentional?

Until that morning, Bill O’Shea is living the dream. After a career of fighting crime in the big city, Bill buys a condo in the beautiful mountain resort community of Wintergreen, Virginia. When he meets his attractive new neighbor, Bill knows his retirement is off to a great start. But then the short-staffed police department asks Bill to help them investigate Thorpe’s death.

Soon, Bill falls into an old routine. Interviewing suspects. Checking alibis. Everyone has a secret to hide, but Bill lacks evidence to tie any of the suspects to the crime. He is missing something–like he has an itch he can’t reach to scratch.

Will Bill and his new friends solve the case, or will the murder of Lou Thorpe remain a mystery forever?

If you love beautiful mountain settings, a charming cast, and intriguing plot twists, you’re going to love this new series!

Clean read: no graphic violence, sex, or strong language.

Book Excerpt – Chapter One

In the dead of the summer night, harsh winds blew from the north into the Shenandoah Valley. The cold front passed through Winchester and New Market and Harrisonburg, bringing relief from the steamy July heat that had gripped the valley for weeks. The chilling weather marched through the smaller cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. From Waynesboro, the front spread into a finger valley to the south and then through cornfields and chicken coops. Cows huddled together for warmth. Windows rattled on old farmhouses. The wind hit the east side of the small valley, sang through the forests of oak and hickory and maple, and rolled over the rounded tops of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

At fifteen minutes after three o’clock in the morning in the mountaintop resort community of Wintergreen, a seventy-four-year-old man woke in bed next to his slumbering wife. No more sleep for him that night. Insomnia. Wind whistled through an unlocked window in another room. He rose, stopped briefly in the bathroom, and dressed for his morning walk down to the Mountain Inn. The old man prided himself on maintaining his physical condition long after most of his contemporaries had given up. They were lazy and allowed wine and steaks and desserts to add to their figures year after year until they could no longer enjoy the greatest thrills life had to offer. Though the sun rose early that time of year—before six—he often returned from his exercise in time to make coffee and observe the day’s dawning from his back deck.

The old man exited through the summer home’s front door carrying a flashlight, but he kept it turned off. Even though clouds had rolled in, there was enough ambient light to distinguish the forest from the paved road. He lumbered a quarter mile up Hemlock Drive and crossed Devils Knob Loop into the Westwood Condos. At the end of the parking lot, he cut through the woods on an asphalt trail. Close-set trees snuffed out the remaining light, and he flicked on the flashlight to pick his way through wet spots on the path. He cursed the intermittent showers that had plagued Wintergreen for a week now—they mucked up the golf course roughs and made the greens slow.

He crossed Wintergreen Drive and soon came to the fitness center parking lot. Next to the mail hut on the left, two sports cars with weather covers waited for their owners to return to the mountain. On the right, a lone SUV sat parked under the branches of an oak tree. The shadows were dark, so he couldn’t tell for sure, but the SUV’s outline resembled that of a Honda Pilot.

At the far edge of the lot, the old man cut back onto Wintergreen Drive and began to make his way down the steep decline of that side of the mountain. At that early hour, he was more likely to see a raccoon or an opossum than a passing car; even so, he kept to the left side of the road. A gust of wind rustled leaves on the hardwood trees at his side. The exercise kept his core warm, but his neck and face and hands were exposed to the chill, so he zipped his windbreaker to his chin and tightened the Velcro straps at his wrists.

Back at the parking lot, the Honda Pilot engine turned over, and the headlights illuminated the mail hut. The driver engaged the transmission and pulled out. Then the Honda Pilot turned left on Wintergreen Drive, passed Devils Knob Loop on the right and Blue Ridge Drive on the left, and headed down the hill.

The old man heard a vehicle approaching from a distance. Who could be out this early other than another poor insomniac? Perhaps a worker with an early shift down in the valley? No. Few workers lived up here on the mountain. Maybe a Wintergreen patrol officer making the rounds? Yeah. That was more likely. Headlights appeared behind him, and though he stayed on the safe side of the road, the old man drew comfort from knowing he wore a bright reflective vest.

The engine came closer, disturbing the peaceful darkness of his routine. The old man would be glad when the car was gone. His heart beat faster, and he subconsciously touched his chest. No worries there. Not yet. Not like many of his buddies—high cholesterol, hypertension—who lugged with them everywhere a ticking disaster in waiting.

Headlights swerved into the trees on his left. Why? The vehicle’s engine raced. It was insane to speed down this road, for the shoulders were narrow and the ditches deep. The old man turned to the uphill slope, and the headlights blinded him. He raised a hand to his eyes. The vehicle turned crazily to the other side of the street and then back toward the old man. His heartbeat thrashed in his ears. Signals rushed to his brain, and he clutched his chest. A terrifying noise of screeching tires pierced the air.

The grille of the Honda Pilot struck the old man, and he took flight. His body shot across the ditch toward the forest and hit the thick trunk of an old hickory. A sickening thwack echoed among the trees and down the nearby ski slope. The old man fell to the ground, and blood seeped from his skull onto dead leaves from the prior season.

The Honda rested three feet past where the old man had stood. The driver stepped from the SUV and shined a powerful flashlight into the ditch. Not seeing the old man, the driver stepped off the road and onto the muddy ground. The flashlight panned slowly across the area beyond the ditch until it found the reflective orange of the vest. There he was. A dark and shiny wet patch stained the ground beneath him.

Dead. Definitely dead.

The old man’s face was turned up. His mustache and upper lip had been torn from his face, leaving his mouth open in a sickly grin.

Not so handsome now.

The driver searched the road in both directions. No cars approached, and the driver climbed back into the Honda and drove down the mountain.

Thank you for reading Chapter One of The Mountain View Murder. In Chapter Two, you’ll meet Bill O’Shea, a retired police detective who is drawn into the investigation of a hit and run homicide.

Generation after generation of Lane women die in childbirth, while the sea claims the men.

Pippin Lane Hawthorne’s grand opening of Sea Captain’s Inn is tainted when a scholar studying the Lost Colony of Roanoke is brutally murdered. Like the black crow that hangs around the old house, could the untimely death be a harbinger of dark things to come?

When her twin brother, Grey, begins bucking the curse by risking his life in the waters of the Outer Banks, Pippin lives in terror that he’ll be the next Lane male to be swallowed by the sea. Now she must use her gift of bibliomancy to save her brother, solve the murder, and end a two thousand year old pact.

I like to put quotes or lines from a book or poem at chapter beginnings in my Book Magic books. For me, they ground the chapter. They also underscore the theme or emotion I want readers to take from it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of my daughter’s best friends gave her this book of poetry for Christmas. I flipped through it one evening and found so many lines to use as chapter openers in my books.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The book is called Every Word You Cannot Say, by Iain S. Thomas⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s visual. It’s uplifting and all about empowerment and self reflection, with a positive spin. It’s a great book to pick up when you want or need to be reminded that you are important. That you are special. That you being here matters. And that you are certainly not alone.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is one of the poems I love:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Every single life you touch, moves the story forward⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And so, if you’re kind, your story becomes part of many stories⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But life is not special because of what happens after it’s over⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Life is special because life is special.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your story is special.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And whether you know it or not, you are adding new words to it every single day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If things are good, they will change If things are bad, they will change.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because change is the nature of every story.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What words will you add to it today?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I love thinking about the words I’ll add to my own story (as well as the ones I write!).

Do you like quotes at chapter openings?

At a murder mystery–themed wedding reception on Georgia’s picturesque Peach Cove Island, the bride is doing an awfully good job playing dead . . .

Marygene Brown always figured she’d marry her childhood sweetheart, Alex Myers, not cater his wedding. But the Peach Diner could use the exposure. Most of the island is showing up—although more for the role-playing murder game at the reception than for the widely loathed bridezilla, Lucy Carmichael. Marygene may have to smile through the festivities, but Mama doesn’t have to hold her peace—especially since only Marygene can hear her mother’s ghost. Mama says she sees an aura of darkness around the wedding.

So when Marygene finds Lucy lying beside the wedding cake, buried in batter, with no pulse, it looks like Mama called it. This is no game. And when the bride’s body simply vanishes, it’s up to Marygene and her best friend Betsy (cousin to the groom and no fan of the bride) to solve a real-life mystery—with a little help from Mama’s sassy spirit . . .

Includes Seven Recipes from Marygene’s Kitchen!
