Generation after generation of Lane women die in childbirth, while the sea claims the men.

Pippin Lane Hawthorne’s grand opening of Sea Captain’s Inn is tainted when a scholar studying the Lost Colony of Roanoke is brutally murdered. Like the black crow that hangs around the old house, could the untimely death be a harbinger of dark things to come?

When her twin brother, Grey, begins bucking the curse by risking his life in the waters of the Outer Banks, Pippin lives in terror that he’ll be the next Lane male to be swallowed by the sea. Now she must use her gift of bibliomancy to save her brother, solve the murder, and end a two thousand year old pact.

I like to put quotes or lines from a book or poem at chapter beginnings in my Book Magic books. For me, they ground the chapter. They also underscore the theme or emotion I want readers to take from it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of my daughter’s best friends gave her this book of poetry for Christmas. I flipped through it one evening and found so many lines to use as chapter openers in my books.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The book is called Every Word You Cannot Say, by Iain S. Thomas⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s visual. It’s uplifting and all about empowerment and self reflection, with a positive spin. It’s a great book to pick up when you want or need to be reminded that you are important. That you are special. That you being here matters. And that you are certainly not alone.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is one of the poems I love:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Every single life you touch, moves the story forward⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And so, if you’re kind, your story becomes part of many stories⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But life is not special because of what happens after it’s over⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Life is special because life is special.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your story is special.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And whether you know it or not, you are adding new words to it every single day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If things are good, they will change If things are bad, they will change.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because change is the nature of every story.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What words will you add to it today?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I love thinking about the words I’ll add to my own story (as well as the ones I write!).

Do you like quotes at chapter openings?
